After hiking Kilimanjaro, I was fortunate enough to be able to spend almost a week on the island of Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanzania. I had been intrigued by the island for years, and more so after reading the novel of the same name by Giles Foden over a decade ago. Foden is better-known for writing “The Last King of Scotland”. The novel Zanzibar was fictional, but did a wonderful job of painting an enticing picture of deserted sandy beaches and palms swaying in the breeze.

When I planned the Kilimanjaro trek, I worried about whether to book the plane ticket or the trek first. My initial plan had been to summit for my 45th birthday, but soon decided that trying to coordinate everything perfectly would drive me to distraction.
